Privacy Policy
Chapter & Verse sets no cookies, runs no scripts, and loads nothing from third parties. We count how pages are read in order to improve the site. We do not sell or share any of it.
What we collect
When you open a page we record the page requested; the page you came from, if it was one of ours; any search terms you enter and the number of results; your country and local hour; whether your browser reports a phone or a desktop, and which operating system, where it offers that; and a visitor number.
The visitor number
We derive a number from your network address and your browser's identification, combined with a secret and the current date. Only that number is stored.
Your network address is not stored. It is used to derive the number and then discarded, and appears in no record or log.
The number is different every day, because the date goes into it. Nobody without the secret can connect one day's number to the next — that is everyone except us. We hold the secret and we do not do this.
What we do not collect
Your network address, your browser's full identification string, the address of any external page that linked to you, and your name or contact details.
Cookies
None. We store nothing on your device and read nothing from it. This is why you have not been asked to accept anything.
Legal basis
Legitimate interest under UK and EU GDPR Article 6(1)(f): understanding how the site is read in order to improve it. Not advertising, and not combined with data from any other source.
No decision about you is made automatically, and no profile of you is built.
Retention
We keep these records indefinitely. There is no deletion date, and we do not delete them on a schedule. We keep them so that one period can be compared with another, and a record that has been deleted cannot be compared with anything.
A day after a visit, the number attached to it is of no use to anyone outside this site: it cannot be connected to you, or to your other days, without the secret.
Records from the same day stay connected to each other for as long as we keep them. That is what makes it possible to see that one reader looked at three chapters, which is the thing the counting is for.
Sharing
Cloudflare hosts this site and processes these records on our behalf. There is no analytics provider, advertising network, or other third party.
Cloudflare operates a global network, so your request may be handled, and these records held, outside the UK and the European Economic Area — including in the United States. Those transfers are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and by Cloudflare's certification under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework and its UK extension.
Your rights
You may object to this processing, and you may ask for access to your data, or for it to be corrected, deleted, restricted, or given to you in portable form.
We hold no name, address or account for you, so ordinarily we have no way to find your records and cannot act on a request to show, correct or delete them (UK and EU GDPR Article 11). Objection always works, because it applies going forward.
If you want the other rights and you know the network address and browser you used, and when, tell us and we will try to find the records that request produced. Article 11(2) provides for exactly that. Whether it works depends on the browser identification matching exactly, which is a long string that changes when a browser updates, so we cannot promise it will. You are not obliged to supply any of it, and we will not ask for more than is needed to answer.
What we do with what you send: we use it only to work out which records are yours, we do not add it to the records, and we delete it once your request is answered. Everything else on this page still holds — nothing about your visits put an address in our records, and this would not either.
If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area, you may complain to your national data protection authority without contacting us first.
